About Me

Welcome to my blog - my ramblings about trying to find healthy, affordable gluten free food in St. John's, NL.
Despite being gluten free, I love to try new products and am always interested to hear about new places to eat.
I try to help the environment and purchase organic products where possible.

Enjoy :)

Nourish Bakery - A must visit!

Nourish Bakery

Paradise is lucky to have the very first Gluten Free Bakery in the area! It's been opened over a year now and is located in the Cedar Plaza - just off the Outer Ring and next to No Frills. I love this place. They always have special treats each week and sell a variety of "regular" baked goods such as raisin bread, italian flatbread, hamburger buns, hot dog buns and quiche. If you check out their Facebook page, you can find out what their specials are - and it's ALWAYS something yummy!

My personal favorite are the sandwich cookies which are absolutely delicious :) If you like oats - they carry a gluten free variety of those as well. The prices are reasonable and in line with speciality stores - PLUS you get the added bonus of freshness - a rarity in the gluten free world!

They take pre-orders (their order form is on their website) so if you are from out of town and wish to place your order ahead of time - it's all taken care of!

Click the title to check out their website - or even better - give them a visit!

Please see the comment below from one of the owners of Nourish - they only use ghee in their breads so they are dairy free as well.

  1. Hi,
Just a quick comment regarding nourish and allergy information. Nourish claims that all its breads are dairy free while the treats contain dairy. However, upon further questioning on my part, I discovered that they polish their bread loaves with fresh butter. How is that dairy free? It's concerning especially since half of celiacs as well as autistic children shouldn't have gluten or dairy. Nourish is great if you only have one dietary restriction, but if you have multiple, you are out of luck. They should change their recipes to include more allergy friendly products, and by doing so increasing their clientele.

    1. Thats is incorrect. Nourish doesn't use butter to polish their loaves. They only use ghee in their breads.

  3. Hi friends! This is Ashley Matthews from Nourish.

Thanks to the second 'Anonymous' for offering clarity on the dairy content in our breads, and thank you as well for emailing me to give me the opportunity to clarify personally as well.

Our bread products are lactose (dairy sugar) and casein (dairy protein) free. We use clarified butter, or ghee, in or bread products making the suitable for people with dairy issues. This would apply to all of our Loaf breads, our Italian Flatbread, Hamburger and Hotdog Buns, Bagels and Pizza Crusts.

As far as having multiple dietary restrictions goes - we are peanut free, we regularly make egg-free breads and we are also free of added preservatives, artificial flavours, and we're soy free as well. If anyone has any additional questions on out ingredients please don't hesitate to email me directly at NourishNewfoundland@gmail.com.
