About Me

Welcome to my blog - my ramblings about trying to find healthy, affordable gluten free food in St. John's, NL.
Despite being gluten free, I love to try new products and am always interested to hear about new places to eat.
I try to help the environment and purchase organic products where possible.

Enjoy :)

President's Choice Gluten Free Products

Just a quick post - President's Choice has introduced a new gluten free line in their bakery. You can check out the selection here http://www.presidentschoice.ca/LCLOnline/products.jsp?type=search&keywords=gluten+free&_requestid=3061996&catIds=cat40002. It's the top 7-8 products I am referring to - the search included more than I was looking for.

Anyone spotted any in NL stores yet? I might try them - depending on the ingredients and any reviews I hear about them :)

  1. I saw a display at the Blackmarsh Dominion yesterday. Everything looked and smelt really good. Quick breads looked soft, cookies chewy, brownies soft but not overly gooey... My first inclination was to try the banana bread. But with my boyfriends persuasion we opted for the choc chip cookies. First bite was impressive. They had a very chewy texture that didnt crumble into sawdust on first bite. Unfortunately it went downhill from there. To me the texture was somewhat overly gritty/mealy. It was a weird combo of chewy and gritty (not too surprising since they mainly contain rice flour) The taste was surprisingly blah. Honestly, I didnt find them to be all that flavourful. And worst of all, for me, they had a mild coconut flavour under tone (1. I HATE coconut 2. I dont think choc chip cookies should taste like coconut even if I DID like coconut)
Given this one product, I dont know if Ill be investing in more products in the future. Knowing me, I have a feeling Ill prob stick to continuing to support NL local gf bakers.

  2. Interesting - sounds like their Recipe to Riches cookies they had last year - they had a coconut taste as well. I'll have to take a run out to Blackmarsh this week and take a look :) Thanks again!

  3. My Aunt showed up at my house with the Banana Bread. The first bite was dry so I put it in the microwave for 10 seconds and it moistened a little. The flavour and texture seemed ok, but I'm not a big banana bread lover so I might not be the best person to give a critique. My mom and Aunt tried it (who do not follow a gluten-free diet) and they thought it was good.

  4. I saw the bread today, I picked it up and it felt rather lead-ish - you know the typically old school gluten free bread type. Maybe they will have some samples in the stores!

  5. Hi,
I also tried the PC gluten free chocolate chip cookies and thought they were pretty good. They are very similar to the regular Dominion bakery cookies. If you liked those, you'll probably like these. I did not notice a coconut flavor while eating the cookies, but perhaps I didn't notice because I am very familiar and enjoy coconut milk products. My advice is to try these out for yourself before writing them off!
