Gluten Free Bagels


There have been huge improvements in the world of gluten free products in the last number of years. No longer do we have to settle for dense, lead-ish bread that crumbles at the touch. We now have lots of varieties to choose from that are tasty, healthy and even organic!

One thing I haven’t been able to find is a good bagel. I mean the kind of bagel that has a little chewiness factor, not too dense, but also not like a feather. There really is nothing like a good bagel sandwich, or a toasted bagel with cream cheese and jam.

So far I've tried the Kinnikinnick varieties: Cinnamon Raisin, Sesame Seed and Plain. They are good, but are a little dense, not chewy, and moderately dry if not toasted.

I also tried the Glutino varieties: Cinnamon Raisin and Plain. And again, they are ok, better if toasted, but not awesome.

Udi’s came the closest to a good bagel. I did however find them a little airy, and they still lacked that “ump” yummy factor.

Has anyone tried other varieties of bagel they can recommend?? I would love to know of another brand to try!

  1. Hi I have tried the Enjoy Life plain bagels available at Dominion on Stavanger Drive. They are not very good; they are small and they won't absorb butter. My favorite are the Udi's cinnamon raisin; they taste more like a raisin bread crust, but are still yummy and an acceptable alternative to their gluten containing counterparts.

  2. Pamelas Bread Mix has a recipe for bagels that I have made a few times and they are my personal fav over any of the store bought brands. The flour mixture has a slight sweetness that almost reminds me of the whole wheat bagels I would eat when I was a kid... They come out slightly dense (but not overly) and even have a nice slight "chew" to them (prob because you actually boil them before baking). You might want to try making them sometime and see what you think..
    My VERY fav bread/bread company ( Canyon Bakehouse... http://canyonbakehouse.com ) has reported that they are coming out with a bagel soon and Im super excited for that day. If they can master bagels they way they have mastered bread, they are going to be perfect!
