About Me

Welcome to my blog - my ramblings about trying to find healthy, affordable gluten free food in St. John's, NL.
Despite being gluten free, I love to try new products and am always interested to hear about new places to eat.
I try to help the environment and purchase organic products where possible.

Enjoy :)

Kashi Indigo Morning Gluten Free Cereal Review

Kashi has 2 new gluten free (and organic) cereals now available in Canada :) Indigo Morning and Simply Maize are available just about anywhere in the city and I've spotted them at Sobeys, Dominion, and Target.

Also, as it is a new product, many places have had them on sale for $3.99 a box the last couple weeks. Regular price is between $4.99 and $5.99.

I was really excited when I spotted these cereal because they are also organic and the ingredient list didn't look too bad. The Indigo Morning has the following ingredients:  Organic whole grain corn, organic dried cane syrup, organic freeze dried blackberries, organic freeze dried blueberries, salt, organic molasses, natural flavour and organic vanilla extract. Each 3/4 cup serving comes in at 100 calories, 6 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of fiber.

The cereal has nice medium sized flakes of corn that are crunchier than a regular flake and the texture was like a really thick frosted flake that is air popped. The dried berries were a nice addition and tasted wonderful! With some help from the other family members, we decided it tasted very similar to Captain Crunch. I thought the cereal tasted great on its own, and of course with the milk (dairy or non dairy) of your choice! I let them soak a little, and they did soften up, but not to the mushy point which was nice!

Overall, I'd buy these again. The corn is whole grain, there is no Bht in the packaging, and it was a tasty treat!

I will update when I have tried the Simply Maize box!

Eat Clean Healthy Grill & Juice Bar - Review

St. John's is lucky enough to have a new place to eat that is healthy and  has gluten free options! Eat Clean Healthy Grill and Juice Bar prides themselves on helping individuals find healthy, clean, yummy food in the metro region.

It's located at 27 Elizabeth Avenue (the place where Mary Brown's used to be) and there are typically lots of free places to park :)

A couple weeks ago I went over and gave it a try! The menu is quite impressive and has everything from vegan, vegetarian, paleo and gluten free options! I went with the omelet with gluten free bread. They typically have Udi's bread, however that day they had sourced from Nourish Bakery.

The omelet was a good size, nice and fluffy and was filled with grilled veggies. There were also 2 pieces of toast included. The price was $9.99 so under $12 with tax. I thought this was pretty reasonable for what you get!

Other items on the menu include salmon, grilled sweet potato, quinoa and no-pump chicken.

I hope to try a few more items in the future as it's walking distance from my work!

Congrats Eat Clean on providing St. John's with a great new place to eat!
