Gluten Free Pasta at Costco - Felicia Gluten Free Penne

Wow - Costco has gluten free pasta! While browsing today, I came across this new item! The brand name is Felicia - I'm unfamiliar with this exact brand, but it was clearly labelled gluten free on both the package and the sign. If you want to check out their website, click here.

For two 500g bags it is $5.99 which is an awesome deal! It didn't seem to be fortified like regular pasta is, however, it did have 1 gram of fiber per serving. It was in the regular pasta / pasta sauce aisle and is definitely worth a try! Stay tuned for a review and if you have already tried it - leave a comment to share!

Nourish Bakery - A must visit!

Nourish Bakery

Paradise is lucky to have the very first Gluten Free Bakery in the area! It's been opened over a year now and is located in the Cedar Plaza - just off the Outer Ring and next to No Frills. I love this place. They always have special treats each week and sell a variety of "regular" baked goods such as raisin bread, italian flatbread, hamburger buns, hot dog buns and quiche. If you check out their Facebook page, you can find out what their specials are - and it's ALWAYS something yummy!

My personal favorite are the sandwich cookies which are absolutely delicious :) If you like oats - they carry a gluten free variety of those as well. The prices are reasonable and in line with speciality stores - PLUS you get the added bonus of freshness - a rarity in the gluten free world!

They take pre-orders (their order form is on their website) so if you are from out of town and wish to place your order ahead of time - it's all taken care of!

Gluten Free Apps - Review

Has anyone tried the Gluten Free Apps that are available? There are quite a few around for both the Iphone and Blackberry. I have a few on my iphone that are pretty neat.

1. Is that Gluten Free? Eating Out
This App lists some major Food Chains (mostly US based ones) and give the status of the menu items as Gluten Free, Gluten Status Uncertain, or Contains Gluten. It's a pretty neat little app to have on the go! Just a word of caution to always remember to ask about cross contamination in the fryers!

2. CeliacFeed
This App uses your location to find gluten free restaurants around you. I can't say I've found it very helpful in St. John's, however, in major centers it probably works much better!

3. GF Living
This App has a comprehensive list of ingredients that are gluten free (or not), they are listed alphabetically, and it's the most complete listing I've ever seen. It has some funky names listed like acesulfame potassium and adipic acid (in case you were wondering, these are gluten free). It also has an Amazon link, web search link and News link which I like.

Where to Eat Gluten Free in St. John's? - Boston Pizza Review

Eating out is always an interesting adventure when you have to stick to Gluten Free. While I don't mind having a salad, sometimes something a little more substantial is in order! I've eaten at the Boston Pizza on Stavanger Drive and Kelsey Drive numerous times and have had their Gluten Free Pizza. They actually use Kinnikinnick pizza crusts and top them with your selected toppings. There is a maximum of 4 toppings plus cheese which works out perfectly for baking. The pizzas are awesome - because they have a proper oven for pizzas, the crust is crispy (but not burned) and the toppings are cooked correctly (not soggy). I highly recommend it! They seem to understand about cross-contamination issues and did mention specifically that their fried foods are cooked in a shared fryer. This is one of my top 10 places to eat in St. John's :)

Gluten Free Rice Krispies!

Gluten Free Rice Krispies are here! Yippee!!! They taste just like the regular "non gluten free" version (at least from what I can remember). They snap, crackle and pop and have a nice crunch! I had mine with honey and some cransins and it was an excellent snack! What's even better is that like regular mainstream cereals, the gluten free version is fortified which is a rarity among the gluten free cereal world! I found mine at the Sobeys on Merrymeeting Road, but they might be available at other Sobeys stores as well. The price was just under $5 which is consistent with the non-gluten free variety.

Pizza Delight St. John's

On Friday, we decided to go to the

Pizza Delight

on Aberdeen Avenue for supper. I've seen their sign advertising

gluten free

crust for awhile and figured I had to try it out!

They actually had 5-6 pizzas listed on the menu with

GF

listed by it.

The crust was actually a 10.5 inch and they only carried one size. I had called previously, and asked if they made sure there was no cross contamination - I was assured they do. I ordered the Chicken Classica which had chicken, peppers, onions, spinach and cheese. There were 4 large pieces and it was enough for supper and a piece to take home!

The pizza cost $13.49 which was equivalent to the 12 inch regular crust pizza. The crust appeared to be home made and was thin and crunchy!

I would definitely go back again!

Kinnikinnick Chocolate Cake Mix

This has got to be the best boxed cake mix on the planet - gluten free or not. It's really simple to make: 4 eggs, 3/4 cup of vegetable oil and 3/4 of water and the mix - no mixer required!

Baking time is variant based on what you make - cupcakes are about 20 minutes while a circular pan could be closer to 40 minutes.

The cake is moist, chocolately and delicious. When 6 non-GF eaters gobble down a couple pieces each - you know you've hit gold!

I generally purchase my Kinnikinnick products

through their website www.kinnikinnick.com however, I've seen them in supermarkets such as

Sobeys

on occasion. A box typically costs $4-$5 dollars and is worth every penny!
